New Classic Interview Player Nov. issue: Dave Lawrence with Nils Lofgren

HEAR PART ONE OF A NEW EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND GUITARIST/ GIFTED SOLO MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST

This month, enjoy a very special November Classic Interview Player issue with a brand new Nils Lofgren interview. I just recorded this two-part conversation you can hear on-demand all month exclusively in the Classic Interview Player. We catch up with this immensely talented performer during the finale lap of the latest E Street Band go-around, which from sound clips of Little Steven and Bruce, appears to be the last for at the very least a few years.

When listening to this two issue special, you’ll hear about Nils special relationship with Bruce Springsteen; also get insight into the workings of one of rock’s most celebrated ensembles, The E Street Band, while getting a first-hand account of his inventive online guitar lessons at the official Nils Lofgren website, solo downloads and much more.

One reason this fresh, new interview is especially relevant to hear coming as Nils Lofgren brings his amazing career through yet another Rock Hall of Fame encounter, this time being part of the two day festivities just days ago Oct.29-30 at Madison Square Garden, where Bruce appeared at both shows, and The E Street Band, led by The Boss, stretched their first night set until 1:30 am, with special guests Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine, John Fogerty of CCR, Sam Moore of Sam And Dave, singer Darlene Love, and finally starting at 1 am, Billy Joel. Bruce returned with U2 and Patti Smith the second night. SEE PHOTOS FROM THE GIGS: Certainly not close-ups by any stretch, I was stoked to be in the house and blasting live to my Twitpic stream, so feel free to jump on-board those images circulating in the slideshow presentation of that feed, or another option… see all the shots we were transmitting during the two shows at my DaveLawrenceOnline Twitpic page. It occurred to me as I watched this historic rock moment, in rock and entertainment’s most historic hall, Madison Square Garden, that the new Classic Interview Player feature is a perfect follow-up to Nils’ participation in what certainly is another highlight in a long professional journey. From his days working as a teenager with Neil Young, his own band Grin, pounding numerous solo releases, touring with Bruce Springsteen in multiple eras of The E Street Band, including now, a prolific series of years where Bruce plied his super E Street Band. This fall, for now, it all comes to an end, and as it does, a remarkable new interview with Nils is here for you to ponder. LISTEN TO PART ONE ALL MONTH.

Also included are special live videos, bringing you the raw essence of how Nils works the audience and material live. It’s Nils through the years both solo and with Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band, showcasing Nils at work live, blazing as a vocalist, guitarist and performer.

Nils Lofgren is a very photogenic artist, and there are cool photos in a slideshow documenting Nils’ career, and look for more videos and photos next month, for the conclusion of this new two-part Classic Interview Player special. I hope you dig it.

Thanks to Jacobs Media, the leading rock radio consultants, for including me on their dream team of radio professionals currently looking for full-time work. This is their October 13 article:

Spare Parts

Our recent “Superheroes” blogs apparently touched a nerve, especially with the scores of radio pros who have found themselves on the beach in the past year or so.  (“On the beach” is a quaint term that is an injustice to those who are out of work with no prospects in sight.”)

On top of this, my remarks at theNAB’s “Stimulus Czar” session directly addressed the need for radio to use its night and late night real estate to grow new talent, rather than voicetrack.  Between the economy and PPM, owners and CEOs have less incentive to develop new shows to replace aging franchises, much less to promote the great brands they already have on the air.

But the real issue is simply how many wonderfully talented jocks, teams, and personalities are idling away on the shelf with no place to go.  While not every station should be personality-driven, neither should there be 10 juke boxes in a market either.  And with all those HD2 channels wasting away, you could put together some pretty killer personality content from just the “spare parts” that are out there looking for a job.

Or you could make the case that these under-utilized HD resources could become the incubators for fledgling high school and college kids who are dying to entertain and hone their crafts.  (Think Kimmel and Conan.)

But the first group – unemployed all-stars – is the focus of this blog.  And with no offense meant to anyone who appears on the list below – or those who don’t – here’s a little game I started to play.  What would a very cool and competitive station sound like, made up solely of talented jocks who are out of work?

So, here’s my first pass at what would be a very potent lineup (yes, some players are out of position, but hey, it’s a fantasy radio league, right?).  I think this group could compete in any market in America.  And they’re probably more affordable than you think.

Jacobs Media Radio All-Stars Dream Team

6-9a Adam Carolla

9a-Noon  Tommy Griffiths

Noon-3p Cerphe

3-6p Stoney and Wojo

6-10p Dave Lawrence

10p-2a Tony Magoo

2-6a Warren Kluck

And to manage this menagerie, let’s put Larry Sharp in the PD’s chair, with Chris Crowley as APD. And to handle weekends, and music director duties, how about Marci Wiser?

This was easy, and I know I’m missing some incredibly talented folks, so perhaps that’s where you come in. What does your radio fantasy team look like?  And if you’re an unemployed all-star, please submit your team and don’t be bashful about inserting yourself in the starting lineup.

For an industry that claims to be about content, it is truly amazing how many great content creators and producers are riding the bench.

MY FAVORITE NEW SONG: SILVERSUN PICKUPS “PANIC SWITCH”

THIS IS #8 IN THE NEW ROCK PLAYER ON THE SIDEBAR- Top 40 overall rock charts, right now. Unreal vocals, a haunting quality that is nostalgic. Also a sick drum line, savage guitar and other augmentation- there are hooks everywhere in a nasty assault that has tons of emotion, energy, inventive arrangements, and is a pure rock song in every sense. I am simply blown away by this jam, and clearly it’s earning it’s way to the top, currently the #8 most played rock song, of all rock formats that play any new music combined.
